Straight answer: if you want a website that people can visit, yes, you need web hosting. If all you have is a domain name and no site yet, the domain alone does nothing. The rent-a-storefront way to think about it #
Imagine opening a shop.
- The domain (yourbusiness.com) is your street address. It is how people find you. On its own, it is just a sign on an empty lot.
- The hosting is the actual storefront, the physical space where your stuff lives and customers walk in. This is the computer (a server) that stores your website and serves it up when someone visits.
- The website is everything inside the shop: your shelves, your products, your layout. The pages, images, and text people actually see.
You need all three to be open for business. A domain with no hosting is an address pointing at an empty lot. Hosting with no domain is a shop with no sign. Put them together and add your website, and now you have a store people can find and walk into.
Do I need web hosting for my domain? #
If you want the domain to show an actual website, yes. Buying yourbusiness.com from a registrar reserves the name, but it does not create a site. To put something there, the domain has to “point” to hosting, where your website files live. No hosting, no site, just a reserved name.

Here is where a lot of beginners get confused, and reasonably so. Website builders like Wix, Squarespace, and Shopify include the hosting in their monthly price. When you build a site on one of those, you are not buying separate hosting, because they host it for you as part of the package.
So if you build your site entirely on one of those platforms, you do not go buy hosting on top of it. The trade-off is that your site lives on their platform and plays by their rules, and the monthly fee is usually higher than plain hosting.
You would buy your own separate hosting when you want to run WordPress or another site you control yourself, rather than living inside a builder’s walled garden. WordPress is free software, but it has to run somewhere, which is where hosting comes in.

Yes. WordPress is the software that runs your site, but it needs a server to run on. That server is your hosting. This is the most common setup for small businesses that want a real, ownable website: a domain, hosting, and WordPress installed on it.
